A haiku sequence : Liege, Belgium, 24th September 2000

out of breath
as the train pulls out
a pigeon's feather

alone at station
other trains thunder past
-- autumn chill

warm hug
a friend's yellow jacket
all those stars

the host sighs
'no room in the inn'
midnight chimes

walls with pictures
a new blue sofa
the scent of grass

music makers
the silence of
the hungry one

a harpist
unravelling the music
arthritic fingers

the cathedral
clothed in white
people of all colors

a broken branch
a windfall of apples
children at school

twilit woods
the shadows deepen
the red of wine

frog shaped stone
frogs too shy
undisturbed pool

haiku discussion
a friend tackles his dessert
with a pencil

middle of the night
middle of the bed
a Halloween cat --

all night long
scratching at the door
windbloom branches

white light
awakening to aroma
of coffee

For Serge, in haiku friendship.
